San Mig Light Misnomer and other beer bits

Did you know that San Miguel Light is a misleading name? San Mig Light actually has the same alcohol content as the Pale Pilsen. So why is it called Light? sanmig light

A lot of low carb diets has been popularized pushing beer companies to follow suite. The US Treasury Department Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Tax and Trade defines a "low carb" beer as those that have >7 grams of carbohydrates. There is also what we call "reduced carb". Basically, it means it has less carbohydrates than it's original version.


San Mig Light only has 3.2 grams of carbohydrates, 98 calories and 4.5% alcohol by volume. The only reason it's called light is because it's less filling compared to other beers. Sabi nga nila, "para sa mahabahabang inuman". It gives the right kick without making you feel bloated compared tpale pilseno the more popular Red Horse that gives more kick for less.

Red horse is the popular choice of unemployed tambays and feeling astig teens because it's cheap, P18 for a stallion and it has 7% alcohol. A few bottles and you'll be crawling your way home. Strong Ice on the other hand has 6.3% alcohol.

By classification, Pale Pilsen is a German pilsener. San Mig light is a light lager. Red horse is malt liquor while San Mig Strong Ice is an Ice beer. Those that are sold by the pitcher are called draft beers.
