Vitamin B - as in Beer

Billy_Malang_vitamin_beer I have a reason to make you feel proud of being a Filipino drunkard. A Filipino inventor named BIlly Malang invented a beer that has Vitamin B. It was showcased in the International Federation of Inventors Association's 40th Anniversary held in Thailand. His innovation  is among the 150 products from 27 countries showcased in the said event.

Although it's still not out in the market, this "prophylactic for drinkers" as Malang calls it, has won a gold medal at the European Union - sponsored Genius Europe competition. Dr. Malang said, "hindi mo rin lang naman maawat ang Pilipino sa pag-inom, ang sweldo, gagastusin niya para sa pakikisama, etc., e di at least, gawin mo nang healthy ang pag-inom (Since we cannot stop Filipinos from drinking beer, as they would even spend their entire salary for the sake of camaraderie, I made a healthy drink made of beer).” He also said, "All clear beers have no vitamins. It just contains alcohol, which is converted to sugar which gives you a big tummy, called the beer belly. So I brought back the Vitamin B to make beer a healthier habit."

The rice beer, which can be stored for six months, is considered a health drink and a food supplement because it is fortified with multivitamins, has low caloric content, and an alcohol volume of 3.5%. So the last part kind of sucks. Obviously, I'm not a fan low alcohol content. As a point of comparison, San Mig Pale Pilsen has 5% alcohol volume while Red Horse has 7%. The beer is said to be cheap too.vitaminbeer

Malang received the patent for his invention in July 2005. I'm not sure though why it's only now that it's making such a buzz. Ordinarily, vitamins are destroyed in beer because of fermentation, but with Malang's process, he managed to bring back the vitamins in the concoction. So he actually received a patent for the procedure and not the actual beer.

A beer that takes the guild out of drinking? What a fine way to start the Chinese New Year. It's the year of the rat, and I'm feeling lucky. Cheers!
